Yesterday, I was scanning the Sunday newspaper when I saw this headline at the front page of the Manila Bulletin regarding the declaration of the state of calamity in Jolo,Sulu ( a southern province in the Mindanao region).
It was a very fascinating story. The reporter wrote in that article that even the members of the Abu Sayaf Group ( Also Know As ASG, one of the most notorious terrorists group in the world) as well as their families were among the thousand families seeking for refuge in the evacuation centers because of floods that was brought by heavy rains in that region.
I can still remember what happened almost two years ago when typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng brought havoc in Metro Manila and nearby provinces which almost erased the whole Metro Manila because of floods. The scene is so hurting to see and the news about those who perished is so devastating.
But the bright side of it is that Filipinos showed their great resilience. Filipinos showed their guts and their " bayanihan spirit " which other nations applauded.
While in other parts of the world who also suffered from great disasters like Haiti, Peru, Australia and many more also showed something similar to this.
Yes, indeed. Disasters is not a good thing to see nor to hear. It is very painful. But come to think of it, disasters is one of the events that erases any country's social margin. We All see that when disaster strikes, there is no rich or poor. There is no celebrity, politician or a plain farmer. There is no rebel nor terrorist.
Whether we like it or not, disaster brings out the best in us. It also brings out the spirit of charity, love and care.
Disasters is not always on the negative side. It is only a way for us to be reminded that regardless of our status, wealth or intellect we still needs other people to survive. As the saying goes " No Man is an Island ".
Definitely disasters unites nations, people, races and the world.
