The news was devastating.
Yes Indeed it is.

The death of former Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff and Cabinet member Angelo T. Reyes shocked almost every Filipinos yesterday. Reyes who served as the Chief General of the AFP from 2000-2001 shot himself in the chest which resulted to his death early morning yesterday.

The very controversial former general walked into the spotlight when he withdrew his support to his then commander in chief former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada in 2001. And the rest is history. He is the longest serving cabinet member of the previous Arroyo administration which he served with multiple positions.

Despite his controversies let's give him a tribute which is still due to him.

Reyes grew up in San Miguel Manila. He finished as a class valedictorian at the Cubao High School in 1960 and in 1966 he was on the top 3 of the graduates of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA). He also finished his post graduate degrees both in a well respected Universities here and in the United States. His military career is also remarkable. He received various awards and medals in his long and very accomplished military career

He actually wanted to have a very quiet retired life with his family but his political attachment is so great that he eventually served public offices after his retirement which resulted to various allegations and scandals. His achievements  were overshadowed by the rotten traditions that we have both in the government and in the military.

Sadly, we lost another great person in the name of Angelo Reyes. He may have received too much incarceration in his career but definitely we cannot changed the fact that he did served his country very well both in the uniform and as a civilian.

I expressed my deepest condolences to the family of the former general.

All that I can say is that, although he has many enemies, I still salute him as a great Filipino and as a great soldier.

Long Live  General Angelo T. Reyes...
